Apple recently sent out security alerts to iPhone users across 92 countries, cautioning them about the active attempts by sophisticated actors to compromise their devices. The notification emails, witnessed by certain media outlets, underscored Apple's "high confidence" in the detection of a mercenary spyware attack specifically aimed at accessing users' phones remotely.

The targeted nature of these attacks, as indicated by Apple, suggests a deliberate focus on individuals based on their identities or occupations. While Apple refrained from disclosing the specific spyware involved or attributing the attacks to any particular government, the deployment of such mercenary software typically aligns with state-led efforts to surveil and intimidate human rights activists, journalists, and political figures.

The gravity of the situation is further emphasized by Apple's detection of similar targeted hacking campaigns in the past, originating from countries including China, Russia, Iran, and North African nations. The latest global alert issued by Apple affects iPhone owners in over 150 countries, signaling the widespread nature of the threat.
