Google is set to roll out ChromeOS version 120, bringing a host of usability tweaks and innovative features to Chromebooks. This update promises to enhance the overall user experience by introducing new functionalities and refining existing ones.

Virtual Desk Button for Enhanced Multitasking

One of the standout features in ChromeOS 120 is the addition of a Virtual Desk Button to the ChromeOS Shelf. This button, positioned to the left of pinned app icons, streamlines multitasking by allowing users to switch between Desks effortlessly. With left/right arrows appearing upon hover, users can navigate through groupings swiftly. Tapping on the button opens a miniature overview of all groupings, providing a convenient way to create new ones. For quick access, users can right-click on the Shelf to toggle the visibility of the desk name.

Nearby Share Self Share for Seamless Device Transfers

Originally introduced to Android phones and tablets in 2022, Nearby Share Self Share is now integrated into ChromeOS 120. This feature enables automatic acceptance of transfers between devices logged into the same Google Account, even when the Chromebook's screen is off. This further enhances the seamless sharing experience across devices within the Google ecosystem.

Detailed App Information for Better Management

Version 120 introduces an improved app management interface. Navigating to Settings > Apps > Manage your apps reveals a new "App details" section. This section provides valuable information about each application, such as its type (Android app, Chrome App, or Web App) and installation source (Preinstalled, Play Store, Chrome browser (PWA), or Chrome Web Store). Users can also access storage and versioning information for better app management.

Enhanced Mouse and Touchpad Settings

ChromeOS 120 refines the input settings by separating Mouse settings from Touchpad settings. Users can now customize cursor speed, scrolling speed, and enable/disable scroll acceleration independently. Additionally, under Touchpad settings, users can choose their preferred key combination for "Use touchpad and keyboard to right-click", including options like alt + click, launcher + click, or Disabled.

Customizable Keyboard Shortcuts

The update introduces a new "Customize keyboard keys" page under Keyboard settings, allowing users to assign shortcuts for various actions such as delete, page down/up, end, home, and insert. Users also gain the flexibility to enable/use F11 and F12 via predefined key combinations.

Improved Picture-in-Picture Experience

Another noteworthy usability tweak is the ability to resize Picture-in-Picture (PiP) windows with ease. On touchscreens, users can now pinch in/out to resize PiP windows, eliminating the need to drag the top-left corner and providing a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.
